Meet Mell Laluca the Koala
The tragic story behind a strong Koala mum, who lost her joey and his now fighting for her life.

Meet Mell Laluca, the Koala that was unfortunately hit by a car in Burleigh Heads.
This 7-year-old female Koala had a pouch joey who tragically didn’t survive the ordeal.
The Currumbin Wildlife Hospital vet team are working hard to save Mell Laluca’s life.
These are preventable accidents, so please keep in mind the following:
- Slow down at dawn & dusk
- Take notice of ‘Koalas Cross Here’ signs
- Please call Currumbin Wildlife Hospital if you see any injured native wildlife.  07 5534 0813
- If you see any injured Koalas, you can call the Wildcare Australia Inc 24/7 Hotline.  07 5527 2444
Now that Mell Laluca’s workup or medical assessment is complete, she will spend time in our Koala rehab before returning to the wild once more.
While in rehab, Mell Laluca will receive fresh eucalyptus leaves from our fodder plantations.
These plantations house around 38,000 eucalyptus trees, but continuous harvesting means they don’t last forever.
It’s important that there’s enough food and gum varieties, so we need to keep planting to save Koalas like Mell Laluca.
